Number Talks and Number Jacks

During the month of March, the entire school is Mad for Math! Connecting numeracy to our world creates so many learning opportunities that we are all excited to share. Make sure to check out the front bulletin board to share our thoughts from Kindergarten all the way up to Grade 8! Awesome!

In our class, during the months of March and April, we will be working through with the Number Talks number sense resource in math. As a basis for this learning, students will become familiar with subitizing numbers between one and ten, which means they will be able to quickly determine a group of numbers just by looking at them. Examples of how we already subitize would be when we are using dice. During our small group learning time, we have begun subitizing using dot cards to help us recognize all of the different possibilities to group individual numbers with our 'math eyes'.

In addition to subitizing, Number Talks allows us the opportunities to learn about rekenreks and ten frames, both important math tools that show us how to add and subtract.
