I can't believe we are already into mid-September! Since the our last post, we have accomplished quite a bit in Room 12. To make our classroom beautiful for the Welcome Back BBQ (thanks again to all of those who came out!), the class decided they would like to use the apples we brought in for us to take a closer look at at the inquiry table to paint with.
Knowing that we could create some pretty neat works of art, we went with the flow and had the class discuss what the apples felt like, what they taste like (from their own experiences), what they are like on the inside and lots of other great connections we knew about from our world. From there, we cut them open horizontally to show the traditional 'apple star' in hopes of making some awesome apple print pictures. Even though none of the pictures showed the star, we loved the way they turned out with everyone's being slightly different from their friends. For those of us who didn't make an apple print painting, we made cool apple trees who's branches were made from tracing our very own little hands! It was fun watching the SK's choose which apple colours they chose to put on their tree and, again, no two trees ended up alike!
We also decided to explore apples even further by researching them using Google to see how many kinds there were (over 7500 according to one cool YouTube video we found!) and what colours apples came in. In addition to information, we also thought of ways we could eat apples and came up with lots of yummy snacks and treats. We even made our own apple sauce in the Crock Pot which just about everyone had a taste of. For this, we used apples without any black spots or holes as we quickly discovered that this is where bugs like to hang out and that these are not safe apples for us to eat. In the end, 17 of us thought it was 'so yummy' while 5 of us thought it was 'yucky and disgusting' and 4 of us knew we didn't like apple sauce so we chose not to try it.
What a cool first fall inquiry! Thanks for sharing everyone :)
