Emergency in Room 12!

During the last few weeks, our classroom has had its Dramatic Play area transform, via student planning, construction and imagination into an Emergency Services Centre. As you enter the room, you are met with

the sounds of children taking part in this centre by battling the gigantic fire spreading up the wall, driving a fire truck and directing traffic for an ambulance to get through. And so we should, because, as quoted by GS, "Emergencies are very serious and we need to make sure people get help if they are hurt!"
In order to create such a real-life space to learn and experience from, we had a local fire chief join us for a presentation to share all about what his job entails.  The class viewed pictures of the fire hall, asked questions about what they were curious about and even tested out his equipment...which we quickly learned was very heavy! All of this allowed us to use our imaginations to map out how we would create a fire truck, complete with side compartments to store lots of tools such as our hand made water hose, an air ambulance and a real siren brought in from home by one of our classmates. What a great time everyone seems to be having and the rich conversations that are taking place are amazing to hear!
