January is Flying By!

Can you already believe that we are half way through January? We have been so busy learning we have not even had the chance to wish all of our followers a Happy (Super Belated!) New Year! Even though we have only been back for just two weeks, so much learning has taken place in Room 12!

In literacy, we have been very busy putting all of the letter sounds that we have mastered into words! This has been a great learning opportunity for all of the Junior Kindergartens as it helps solidify our understanding of the alphabet and is challenging us to put our knowledge to good use to share our thoughts and feelings in a totally new way. For those of us in Senior Kindergarten, it is a great review and reminder for us to keep putting these words into action in our daily writing.

In math, many of us have mastered the 'terrible teens' and are counting on into the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's! One cool thing we noticed about numbers, is that we also use them to tell us what the temperature is outside. We now know that when it is negative anything that means that it is below zero and pretty cold. Last week the temperature was so cold The Weather Network shared that the handlers at the Pittsburgh National Aviary had to bring their penguins inside AND it was colder here, in the City of Kawartha Lakes, than it was on Mars!

In addition to counting to 50, we have also started learning about the different attributes of some crazy shapes. As a class, we have described what hearts, stars, ovals, diamonds, trapezoids, pentagons and hexagons are and how we can use our 'math eyes' to locate them in our world. Not sure how to activate your 'math eyes' to find all of these awesome shapes? Just ask us and we can fill you in :)
